Derek Houtz, a 2007 graduate of the Selinsgrove Area High School, was honored earlier this year as the first recipient of The Bisbee Project Scholarship for Service.

 

​Derek is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Houtz of Winfield, PA. Upon graduating from Selinsgrove Area High School, Houtz began military service this past July at the United States Military Academy at West Point. After successfully completing the summer initiation program known as 'Beast,' in which he was challenged with drill training, marches, rifle marksmanship, and physical training, Houtz was officially declared an Army Cadet and welcomed to the Corps of Cadets.



Family and friends joined Cadet Houtz at this ceremony, known as Acceptance Day, on August 18th. Acceptance Day marks the end of Cadet Basic Training and the conclusion of summer training for the entire Corps. The fall academic term began on Monday, August 20, and so far Derek has reported excellent progress in his studies at West Point.
